A guide for families

How to choose a care home

Choosing care for someone you love may be the hardest thing you ever do for them. These are the questions worth asking on every visit, including a visit to one of our homes.

01

Ask about the people

  • How long has the manager been here, and can we meet them today?
  • What is your staff turnover like, and how many staff are on at night?
  • Will the same caregivers look after Mum most days?
  • How do you tell families about changes, good and bad?
What to listen for

Good answer: specific names and numbers, offered without hesitation. Worrying answer: vagueness about staffing or a manager you never get to meet.

02

Ask about daily life

  • Can we see this week's actual activities programme?
  • What happens when someone doesn't want to join in?
  • Can we taste the food, and who plans the menu?
  • How do residents personalise their rooms?
What to listen for

Good answer: a real programme on the wall and residents who look busy or content. Worrying answer: a television doing the entertaining in a silent lounge.

03

Ask about care and safety

  • What are your latest certification audit results?
  • How do you handle falls, and how would we hear about one?
  • What happens if care needs increase? Can the person stay here?
  • How does the nurse call system work at 3am?
What to listen for

Good answer: audit results shared openly, and a clear path from resthome to hospital-level care on the same site. Every certified facility's audit reports are also public on the Ministry of Health website.

04

Trust the visit itself

  • Do staff greet residents by name as you walk through?
  • Does it smell fresh, and does it sound like a home?
  • Are residents out of their rooms, and do they look cared for?
  • Would you be happy to arrive unannounced next time?
What to listen for

The half-hour walk-through tells families more than any brochure. If you are welcome to drop in at any time, that confidence usually reflects the care.
